Elijah and the Crow, egg tempera, 23 and 24 c. gold on 1" thick wood panel, 16 x 12", MF Dondelinger
In a private collection.
One day while working in my New Mexico studio, I had to step out for only a few seconds. When I returned a very large adolescent raven (they're huge) had hopped into the studio and was staring at this piece. As he was cocking his head back and forth, I raced over to grab him but he swiftly moved and wedged himself in between the wall and some table legs. As I reached down, he expanded his wings and shrieked! I expanded my arms and shrieked. We had scared each other. It was now or never and I closed my eyes, turned my head, reached down and scooped the raven up and quickly deposited him outside.
