Iconography
My interest in iconography came unexpectedly: A visit to St. Gertrude's Monastery, Sr. Carolyn Miguel learning to write icons, and my desire to have an icon led me to study iconography at the monastery. Later I was invited to apprentice in Italy with master iconographer Fr. GianLuca Busi. It was quite the detour from my contemporary work at the time but its deep history, quality of materials, and theology moved me to spend thousands of hours learning the techniques, the materials, process and meaning of this very special and sacred form of painting. It changed my approach to painting as well as life. Iconography has inspired much of the contemporary work I create now and helps me see the sacred in every day life.
